When considering the most germ-ridden area of your workplace, the lavatory is sure to top the list, but research has revealed that the kitchen plughole is also a breeding ground for bacteria.
Your office kitchen sink may be used for washing hands as well as dishes, accumulating all sorts of dirt and debris that builds up over time, the Daily Mail reports.
Once the food or bacteria becomes trapped, it can proliferate in the moist location of the drain, re-emerging with splash backs or through the air.
Citing research from the University of East Anglia, the publication states that sink plugholes can play host to dangerous germs like E. coli and salmonella, which can become airborne and emerge from the plughole into the kitchen atmosphere.
Once airborne, the germs from what the researchers describe as “microbial reservoirs” can infect people in the setting, causing illness.
Salmonella can make its way down the plughole from washing chicken at the sink, while ground beef or contaminated produce prepared in the kitchen may be transferred down the sink during washing up.
Both kinds of bacteria can be responsible for serious bouts of illness, although often present as milder conditions characterised by an upset tummy and vomiting.
According to NHS information, the kitchen sink actually contains 100,000 times more germs than a toilet, despite the lavatory often springing to mind as the dirtiest part of a building.
